Pacquiao vs Hatton Boxing: THE FINAL PRESSER/ Pacquiao-Hatton Photos

Proclaiming Saturday night’s mega-showdown between Pacquiao and Hatton to something “more than a prize fight,” Top Rank boss Bob Arum read from Rudyard Kipling’s “The Ballad of East and West”—the source of inspiration for Saturday night’s entitled showdown, “The Battle of East and West.”

Ricky Hattonwas on his serious side. Though he did not predict a knockout over Pacquiao, he did predict a win.

“I think you have all made your mind up already,” said Hatton. “I have been reading what you have been saying and what everyone has been saying. That doesn't scare me. I have been here before. I have been the underdog before.

"I hear what you say. 'He is an over-hyped, over-protected, fat beer drinking Englishman.

“But guess what? That ‘he’ is going to shock the world again.”

Manny Pacquiao’s words were few. Stating his readiness, he promised that he would do his best to honor his country.

“I respect Ricky Hatton,” said Pacquiao. “He is a good person. He is a nice guy and I would like to remind everyone that there is nothing personal for this fight and we are just doing our job to give a good fight to the people and make them happy.”

Following suit, Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, was just as pithy in his choice of words, saying only that he had the best fighter who was in the greatest shape of his life.

"I've been telling Manny all along that I will be disappointed if the fight goes longer than three rounds." Roach said.

“People want to watch this fight not because of the fighters' abilities, not because they can fight and have come to give fans an exciting fight, but because of respect. People respect what Pacquiao and Hatton can do in the ring.

"That's why people are going to watch this fight, because they respect both of these fighters and they know they are going to see a great great match.”

Pacquiao vs. Hatton "The Battle of East and West," presented by Rockstar Energy Drink and promoted by Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions, in association with MP Promotions and Hatton Promotions, is a 12-round bout for Hatton's IBO and Ring Magazine World Junior Welterweight titles. The fight is also sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and Southwest Airlines.

James Kirkland Off Pacquiao-Hatton Card (Battle of the East and West) Due To Incarceration.

One of the most promising and exciting up-and-coming boxing contenders today, unbeaten light-middleweight contender James Kirkland of Austin, Texas may be looking at the end of his career. He is now currently held in prison due to a federal gun charge, the 25-year-old is definitely not now fighting on the big May 2nd Manny Pacquaiao Vs. Ricky Hatton bill in Las Vegas.

Kirkland was arrested in Austin this past Sunday, when police allegedly found a loaded gun in his car. Kirkland was arrested and charged with being a convicted felon who was illegally holding a gun and ammunition. Kirkland was previously convicted of a 2003 armed robbery.

Reports say the maximum sentence for this crime is ten years. Kirkland, who will be detained in prison until an as yet unknown date, will appeal in court.

The 25-0(22) contender was scheduled to face Michael Walker on May 2nd, and then, providing he won, Kirkland was in line to fight WBO light-middleweight champ Sergiy Dzinziruk later in the year. Now, if the worst come to the worst, Kirkland will see all this go up in smoke and boxing will see one of its most thrilling talents go to waste.

WATCH REPLAY: Froch vs Taylor ONLINE STREAM BOXING

Carl Froch (25-0, 20 KOs) remained undefeated Saturday evening after a stellar comeback performance that had a near sell-out crowd of 3,726 on their feet when he knocked out former undisputed middleweight Jermain Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KOs) to retain the World Boxing Council (WBC) super middleweight world title on SHOWTIME.

England’s undefeated WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch scored the biggest win of his career moments ago at the Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut, stopping Jermain Taylor in the dying seconds of the final round.

Taylor outshined Froch and sent him to the canvas with a hellacious overhand right in the third round; the first time Froch has ever been down in his career. Froch recovered and was able to find his rhythm as he pressed the action in the middle rounds.

At the start of the 12th and final round, Froch felt that he needed a knockout to win the fight. And that is just what he got. Froch dropped Taylor using his solid jabs and strong right hand and, while Taylor was able to recover, he never fully regained his legs. At 2:46 of the 12th round after sustaining a flurry of monstrous punches, referee Michael Ortega stepped in and held a defenseless Taylor.

It was a fair stoppage and with the win Froch retained his WBC super middleweight title and improved to 25-0 (20 KOs) while Taylor drops to 28-3 (17 KOs).

WATCH REPLAY: Peñalosa vs Lopez ONLINE STREAM BOXING

Juan Manuel "JuanMa" Lopez TKO Gerry "Fearless" Penalosa in round 9.

The only thing more amazing than ‘Fearless’ Gerry Penalosa’s ability to take a punch was rising star Juan Manuel Lopez’s ability to dish them out. In a sensational display of fortitude and punishment, Puerto Rico’s Juan Manuel Lopez retained his WBO super bantamweight title with a ninth round stoppage over Filipino veteran Gerry Penalosa earlier this evening in Bayamon.

While “Fearless” (now 54-6-2) landed some solid counters and engaged in just enough fierce exchanges to stay in the fight, he was given the worst beat down of his long career. Finally, trainer Freddie Roach had no alternative but to stop the fight between the ninth and tenth stanzas. Indeed, it was painful to watch the old warrior sustain so many blows both to the body and head, but by the same token, he was in against a shooting star of the sport—and only shooting stars land 80 power punches in one round, particularly on a pro like Penalosa.

Viloria’s big right hand and left hook threw Solis off his game and the challenger started breaking down the champion early. Viloria never allowed Solis to establish his rhythm and punished the champion the whole fight. In Round 11, Viloria landed a picture perfect right hand that sent Solis crashing to the canvass. “I’m looking forward to a great fight, to another title being made again," the Hawaii-based Filipino fighter, who is seeking Solis’ International Boxing Federation lightflyweight belt, told 24 Oras.

“Ulises Solis is known as a Filipino killer but I’m gonna stop his streak and take his title away from him," he added.

Solis had made his reputation as a “Filipino executioner" after dismantling three previous Pinoy rivals, Bert Batawang, Rodel Mayol and Glenn Donaire, brother of world champ Nonito "the Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr.

In avenging the defeats of his countrymen at the hands of Solis, the “Hawaiian Punch" will also be proving that he still has a place among the world's elite fighters.

Legendary Boxing Icon De La Hoya Retires

Boxing's Golden Boy Oscar de la Hoya formally announced his retirement today during a press conference held at the Nokia Plaza in downtown Los Angeles surrounded by family and close friends and in front of the international media.

De la Hoya, a 10-time world champion and the only boxer in history to have won six titles in six divisions, kept his emotions in checked and told the fully packed media conference "now I understand why an athlete has so much hard time retiring."

"After that fight, I thought that was it for Oscar," De La Hoya's wife Millie told the media when it was her turn to speak. But it took Oscar 'four agonizing months' before arriving a decision.

On hand to give their support to De La Hoya were his wife Millie, business partner Richard Schaefer, Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, his father Joel de la Hoya, Sr., AEG President and CEO Tim Leiweke and head of HBO pay per view Mark Taffet.

Pacquiao-Hatton Updates: Wild Card Gym OFF-LIMITS

The Wild Card Gym is now off-limits to those with no business being around as Manny Pacquiao trains.

This was emphasize by the newest member of the Team Pacquiao and trainer Michael Moorer; “If you don’t belong here, it’s time to go”.

This new rule is now strictly being imposed, with the approval of the boxer (Manny) himself, as the fight with Ricky Hatton moved just three weeks away. Manny Pacquiao is in the final phase of his training, the final push. Sparring sessions get longer and tougher, and nothing comes easy each day.

The goal of this "Off-Limits" was to insure Manny of no distraction while in a rigid training inside the Wild Card Gym. Still Pacquiao loves to train when there are fans around him, and he loves to put on a show. Roach must have felt that the practice had to stop.

“There will be no more fan interaction with Manny Pacquiao until the fight is over on May 2. Under the new rule, no one outside of official Team Pacquiao members is allowed in the gym before, during and after the training.

Except on Wednesday, of course, when Pacquiao holds a media workout in the Hollywood sweatshop. The doors are closed when Hatton trains at the IBA gym in Las Vegas.
